The Purpose Assessment is an integrated tool designed to help users identify their core motivations, leadership styles and impact preferences. By completing the assessment, users gain actionable insights to better align their professional activities with their personal purpose.
This feature is a premium feature; please connect with your account team to enable it. When enabled, it is available at the program level and provides access to the Purpose Assessment for all participants, including both admins and users, regardless of their role.
Why It Matters: The Purpose Assessment benefits both individual participants and organizations by enhancing self-awareness, improving mentorship connections and optimizing leadership and team dynamics.
Increased Self-Awareness: Participants gain insight into their motivations, leadership styles and desired impact, helping them align goals with personal purpose, driving growth, career decisions and job satisfaction.
Better Mentorship Matches: By pairing participants based on shared values or complementary styles, mentoring programs foster authentic relationships, boosting engagement and program success.
Optimized Teams and Leadership: Organizations can use assessment insights to build teams with complementary strengths or align projects with participants’ purpose profiles, enhancing collaboration and productivity.
Actionable Insights: The Purpose Distribution Report offers a high-level view of participants' purpose types and leadership styles, helping organizations align leadership training, team assignments and cultural initiatives with workforce values.
What is “Purpose Activation”?
Purpose Activation helps employees discover what intrinsically motivates them at work, offering insights and practical tips to boost performance. By identifying personal purpose, employees can foster a high-performing, collaborative environment.
Through Purpose Activation, employees explore three key areas:
Who they want to impact – whether on an organizational, individual, or societal level.
Why they want to make an impact – aligning with values such as Karma (believing actions drive results) or Harmony (valuing fairness and equity).
How they make that impact – for instance, by creating a structure or navigating through information.
Employees answer a 30-question assessment to identify their “purpose archetype,” revealing their key motivations, biases and sources of fulfillment. When aligned with their roles, awareness of this purpose creates more productive, fulfilled employees and contributes to organizational success.
How Purpose Activation Applies to Mentoring
In mentoring, knowing one’s purpose profile enables deeper connections. Mentees paired with mentors sharing similar motivations feel more understood. With purpose insights, mentors can better understand mentees, guiding meaningful conversations and helping them set fulfilling goals.
Admin View
Admins can track which users have completed the assessment. From there, they can prompt participants who haven’t completed the assessment through the Campaign Messaging Tool or by scheduling automatic reminders.
User Experience for Existing and New Users
For Existing Users
Once the feature is enabled, existing users will see the Purpose Assessment prompt on their homepage the first time they log in. This prompt will only appear on their initial login after the purpose assessment is enabled. Additional prompts will remain in the left navigation and user profile until the assessment is completed.
If the user chooses not to take the purpose assessment immediately, it will appear on the left side of the navigation panel, as shown below.
For New Users
After a user completes their onboarding profile, they will be prompted to take the “Purpose Assessment” as the final step. For new users, this step is automatically included in the onboarding process, appearing just before they complete their registration.
The next screen will take you to the actual Purpose Assessment. The first “slide” is an introduction to the assessment and gives some more context about what the user should expect.
The Purpose Assessment is taken in a full-screen experience to focus the user on the task. Each click of “Next” saves the previous answer and moves the user to the next question.
Once you complete the Purpose Assessment, you will be taken to the final screen to view your results. Users can click on the “Let’s Dive In” button to view the results in detail.
Assessment Flow
The Purpose Assessment is composed of a series of questions designed to identify:
Why do they want to make an impact? (e.g., are they karma-driven or value-based?)
Who do they want to impact? (e.g., individuals, their organization, or society at large?)
How do they make an impact? (e.g., by process or, by contrast, design?)
Users can save their progress and exit the assessment at any time. Upon re-entering the program, the system will prompt users with a “Complete Purpose Assessment” notification if they have not yet finished the process. Clicking on this prompt will take users directly back to the last unanswered question in the assessment.
Matching and Management
Purpose drivers can also be incorporated into the matching algorithm. You can work with your Customer Success Manager (CSM) to configure matches using Purpose Assessment data. By setting up custom match configurations based on Purpose Drivers, they can ensure that mentoring pairs are aligned according to core values and shared motivators. Note that admins cannot configure this feature independently.
Filtering and Campaigns
Admins can track which users have completed the assessment by applying the Purpose Type Filter within the Admin Dashboard. This filter allows admins to view participants’ Purpose Profiles and target users who have not completed the assessment via the Message Users tool. As a user in the Admin View, you can filter users based on their purpose drivers.
Navigation Path: Manage > Program Configuration> User Views
Next, click on “Create New View” to filter profiles.
Add any details needed, and then click on the “Next” button.
After clicking the “Next” button, additional boxes will appear, allowing you to specify filter criteria. Scroll down to the “Profile” section, where you can filter users based on their purpose profile. To see only users who have completed their Purpose Assessment, select the "filled" option.
You can filter by selecting the “Not Filled” button in the Profile Criteria section to view users who have not yet completed their profiles. This allows you to identify and encourage them to finish their profiles.
After you have updated it, click the “Update View” button to see the full list.
You will be directed to a screen where you can send a message to individuals who have not yet completed the Purpose Assessment.
Note: Administrators can also filter for users with a specific Purpose Type (Ex: Connector) or Driver Values(Users with Impact Driver as Organization) using the same filters as applicable for other profile fields.
Navigation Path: Actions > Send Message
Viewing and Downloading Results
Once the assessment is completed, users will receive instant feedback on their Purpose Type and Leadership Style. This information will be displayed within their User Profile under the Purpose Profile section.
Viewing Results: Users can click on “Show More” under the Purpose Profile to expand details about their assessment results, including their purpose statement and impact drivers.
Downloading Reports: Clicking the “Download Report” button generates a PDF report containing the full assessment results, including personalized recommendations. The PDF is automatically downloaded to the user’s local device.
Users can also see a quick overview of their leadership style.
Post-Assessment Actions
Once the assessment is completed, users and admins can leverage the insights in several ways:
For Admins: Admins can utilize the Purpose Profile Data in conjunction with the Program Analytics Dashboard. By clicking on New Reports, admins can visualize the breakdown of purpose types and leadership styles across their program, enabling more informed decision-making around team structuring and mentoring matches.
After clicking the “Generate Report” button, you’ll be directed back to the program admin dashboard, where you can view the report showing users with specific purpose profiles.
Mobile Access
The Purpose Assessment is fully optimized for mobile devices. Users accessing the program from mobile browsers or apps can initiate and complete the assessment like desktop users.
